We are looking for a very special and savvy adopter to give Joey the wonderful life he deserves. This is one of the saddest stories NJSRN has heard in a long time. Joey was not properly socialized by his original owners to a new baby in the family. As a result, he fearfully reacted to the baby by nipping and started becoming aggressive toward strangers. Instead of providing help, his owners barricaded him away in a closet (see photos #2 and #3) for several years. This isolation caused the fear aggression to get worse. Fortunately, NJSRN was alerted to Joey's plight and his family agreed to surrender him. But not before emotional damage was done to this frightened yet loving dog. Joey is demonstrating trust with his foster family. He loves lap time, petting, and gives them an occasional kiss. He likes to play fetch and interacts nicely with other dogs; however, even with all his improvements, Joey still is challenged. Unexpected loud sounds or movements can provoke him. He fearfully reacts to visitors and strangers who get too close to him and will bite at strangers who insist on petting him. Joey's sad past is behind him but love alone is not enough to rehabilitate him. Only inquire about him if you are prepared to provide ongoing effort to resolve his issues.
