This poor pup has had a rough start in life. He was surrendered to a high kill shelter in NYC that placed him with a family that returned him in just four days. Apparently, Pete was so freaked out that he growled and tried to bite his new owners. That meant he could only be released to rescue; otherwise, the shelter would have to put him to sleep. How could we leave a 13-month old dog in a shelter? We knew we had to try to help Pete. Once in a foster home, it became obvious that Pete acted out because he was very fearful. He isn't afraid of people - he's very friendly and outgoing - but he's afraid of being hurt, touched in certain areas, and picked up. After about a week with lots of praise and positive reinforcement from one of our Schnauzer Sitters, his confidence has started to grow. Someone tried (unsuccessfully) to groom Pete, and he's now a mix of shaved, knotted, and matted patches all over his body. So, slowly his foster mom started scissoring away the clumps of hair and, hopefully, Pete will soon look adorable again. Pete is a typical Schnauzer pup. He loves toys and running around with other dogs. He adores being petted, and will bury his face in your lap when you rub his head and ears. He will need an experienced home - one that will continue to help him build confidence. Check back for post-grooming photos and updates on Pete's progress.
